The Pen:
Throughout history sailing has been instrumental in the development of civilization, affording mobility for trade, transport, warfare, and fishing. Though it’s greatest contribution has been to the many great explorations in the world. This pen captures the romance and adventure of old sailing ships. It has a captivating scene engraved on tip of a grand tall ship, while the end is embellished with the captain’s wheel and compass. Nautical rope accents can be found throughout and encircling the detailed Anchor clip, which given it’s history, is considered a symbol of well-grounded hope. Easy to make and features a Parker style refill. Plus the authentic patina and natural darkening of the Antique Pewter brings out the details of the finish and creates a unique feel with a charm all its own. It will add a sense of warmth to your handmade creation.

The Species:
Box Elder is a pale white, sometimes with a yellow/green hue frequently with red or pink streaks. The red stain is produced by the tree’s natural defenses when wounded—it is thought that this compound is meant to inhibit the growth of fungus Much of the reddish coloring becomes a more subdued pink or brown/gray upon drying which makes this a beautiful wood to dye. Burls are extremely beautiful and prized for small wood turnings like pens.

Metal Finish:
Antique Pewter

The Process:
The hand selected materials for this item were first cut and drilled, then turned on a lathe by me, Jack. Sanding is completed through many grits until the piece is perfectly smooth to the touch. Next, up to 10 finish coats of cyanoacrolate (”CA” Superglue) are applied by hand, one at a time. The finish is buffed with micromesh pads, then shined with polishing compound until the surface has a glass-like appearance.

This method, the most difficult of techniques, provides your purchase with the most durable exterior possible, and a beautifully reflective surface that resists the elements and will last for many years.
