Laser cut and dyed wood, crushed stone and 24K plated gold compose this unique Mason Pen. Basswood’s soft, fine, and even texture doesn’t detract from the intricately cut lines in the compass inlay. Curly Maple’s ripples in the grain ripples create a 3-dimensional effect appearing like curls wrapping around. Both woods have been dyed to accentuate their natural colors and protect from fading. The center ‘G’ inlay is made from crushed stone. Finished with highly durable cyanoacrylate glue and polished to a glass-like finish.
After the pieces were dyed and assembled, the flammable ink was set on fire to create some patterning. The whole thing is perfectly smooth and very shiny. The result is a “Mason Grunge” pen — if I might take artistic liberty in calling it that.
With its elegant profile, superb balance, and smooth action, the Sierra Pen has earned its place as a favorite among pen turners. It’s a single twist pen – one turn of the barrel exposes the ballpoint tip. The Manhattan Ballpoint Pen takes standard Parker ballpoint pen refills.
The hand selected pieces for this pen were turned by Jack D. Ciallella on a lathe. They were sanded through several grits of sandpaper until perfectly smooth. A finish of cyanoacrolate (”CA” Superglue) was applied, then buffed until shining beautifully. This method of finishing gives your pens the most durable exterior possible and a glisten that will last for many years.
I am not a Mason, but friends with one. I am making pens for him to give as gifts to his brothers. This was the first test pen in the series. If you'd like a similar Mason pen in a different style, please let me know. Thank you.
